Often called “The Moving City,” Dustpoint is a ramshackle temporary city on Harmas, located at the current edge of the terraformed sector. As the terraforming spreads, Dustpoint moves, so that it’s constantly on the edge of the civilized area of Harmas. It’s something of a lawless place, although crime there can’t get too out of control, as Harmas is the local Planetary Union outpost (and not a very big planet).
This small city (population estimates vary, but average at about 60,000) is a ramshackle conglomeration of tents, collapsible plasteel cubicle buildings, and modified transport vehicles. The people of Dustpoint, as might be guessed, are a mixture of criminals (reformed and current), survivalists, pioneer families, outcasts, and any others who long to be as far from civilized society as they can.
There is technically a Union outpost here, a small one-room mobile office, but the real authority in Dustpoint is the Meeting, an informal group of leading merchants, criminal bosses, and other notable citizens. Like most of Dustpoint’s institutions and traditions, the Meeting grew organically from the needs of the community. The personalities of the folks who live in Dustpoint, and the conditions they live in, mean that most people work together to get by, or at the worst stay out of each other’s ways; the Meeting has no official membership, and only gets together when events demand it.
